We are a historic downtown church formed in 1838 originally meeting in a variety of places including the Marshall University Campus. Our first church building was constructed in 1872 at the back of the lot where the church currently stands. In 1896 our present sanctuary held its first worship service and since then the building has been expanded to meet the needs of the congregation. Since its inception in 1838 this church has shared the good news of the Gospel, made disciples in its sphere of influence, and shown the love of God to the needy.
Today strong biblical messages are delivered in Sunday School and Church each Sunday morning. There are weekly Bible Study groups that gather to examine verse and chapter of the good book. On Wednesday evenings our very popular mid-week miracle LOGOS program takes place. This is an intergenerational weekly ministry that is biblically focused and serves over 80 children and adults. We would encourage anyone who is interested in this church to make an appointment to stop by some Wednesday evening to see what it is all about.
Historically this church has sought ways to serve and meet the church’s and community’s needs whether its providing a place to meet or serving a meal. With our time, our talents and our treasure we have sought to support such organizations as Young Life, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice of Huntington, Ronald McDonald House, Fighting Hunger Food Bank, Recovery Point, Team of West Virginia and the Empty Bowls fundraiser.
One of our strongest mission endeavors is the Cabwaylingo Presbyterian Chapel, established by FPC in 1956 and located in Dunlow, WV. In this southern Wayne County community, the Chapel is a beacon of God’s mercy, grace, and love. Many children in the area are involved in the Chapel’s children/youth ministry. From the Cabwaylingo food pantry over 200 families a month are receiving assistance plus there are programs to build and repair homes in the community.
There are many opportunities to have hands on in this church whether it is studying the Bible, supporting our missions or just making friends where you worship. If you would like to know more about FPC join us for worship every Sunday morning at 10:45am. We’ll save a seat for you!
